A monetization or sales design in which a fixed payment yields a probabilistic reward from a pool of possible items. The term derives from Japanese capsule-toy vending machines (gachapon) and is widely applied to mobile game loot boxes and blind-box collectible merchandise.

The mechanic layers variable-ratio reinforcement onto low per-unit costs to encourage repeat spending. Consumer protection debates center on pity timers (guaranteed drops after a fixed number of pulls), spending caps, and mandatory odds disclosure — all aimed at limiting compulsive spending while preserving engagement mechanics.
