AI systems capable of autonomously executing tasks on behalf of users — researching, comparing, purchasing, and booking in ways that previously required human action. Accelerated through 2025–2026 by major AI agent platforms (OpenAI Agents, Google Gemini Advanced, Adobe AI Assistant), agentic AI is beginning to intermediate a measurable share of consumer purchasing journeys.
For marketing, agentic AI introduces a new evaluation layer: brands are assessed and recommended by machines before ever reaching a human decision-maker. This elevates ai-discoverability to a core competency and prompts the brand-as-os reframing, in which brand is understood as the interface logic mediating between AI agents and human customers rather than a direct-to-consumer identity layer.
